Shrimp and crabs are the best live bait for the drums. Send out a shrimp or crab with a split shot in the vicinity of a tailing black drum and they will most likely smell it and eat it. For their size, they have 2 sets of nostrils and relatively small eyes. This tells you that they mostly hunt with their eyes.
If you want to get the most bang for your buck, you can also use live crabs and shrimp to lure the drum to the bait. If you are using live crab bait, make sure that the crabs are not too large or too small. The larger the crab, the more likely it is to be eaten by a black-drum.
It is also a good idea to use shrimp bait if you have a lot of live shrimp in your tank. Black drum will eat the shrimp, but not as much as they would if they were in a tank with lots of shrimp.

What do black drum like to eat?
Young drums feed on maritime worms, small shrimp, and crabs and small fish. Larger drum eat small crabs, worms, algae, small fish and mollusks. Barbels are used to finding food by smell and feel. While feeding in the water column, drum often dig or root out buried mollusks and worms. Barbels are very sensitive to changes in water temperature and pH.
Barbs can also be damaged by chemicals such as chlorine, chloramines, ammonia, nitrates, phosphates and nitrites.
These chemicals can damage the barbs, causing them to break off and fall to the bottom of the tank. pH is too low, the bacteria will not be able to grow and the drum will die. pH of less than 7 is considered acidic and a pH between 7 and 8 is alkaline. Acidic water is not good for a drum, as it can kill them.
An acidic water will also kill any bacteria that may be living on the barbels.
What hooks for black drum?
The range of an 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook is the correct hook size for fishermen. Black drum are primarily a bottom-dwelling fish and it is important that you use enough weight to keep the bait on the bottom. The larger the diameter of the hook, the more weight it will take to hold the fish in the water, and the less weight you will need to put on your line to reel it in.
If you are fishing with a line that is too short, you may not be able to get a good hold on a fish, which will result in a loss of bait. A good rule of thumb is to use a 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter hook for a 10 to 12 pound fish and a 3 to 5/8 inch size for larger fish such as bass, crappie, or walleye.
