We use an air chisel with a Panel Cutter bit, set the drum on it’s side. Cut below the lip on the drum top and roll it around till the top and then the bottom come off. You don’t need much to make them flat. Now we need to drill a hole in the middle of the panel. I used a drill press to do this, but you could also use a hand drill if you have one.
Drill a 1/4″ hole through the center of each panel, about 3/8″ from the edge. This will allow us to slide the panels in and out without damaging them. You can also drill the holes on both sides of a panel at the same time, so you don’t have to worry about drilling the hole on one side and not the other. Once you’ve drilled your holes, you’ll want to sand them down to a nice smooth finish.
If you’re using a sanding block, be sure to use it on a smooth surface, not a hard surface like a table or countertop. Sanding the edges of your panels is a good idea, as it will help them to stay in place when you put them back together. Once your panel is sanded down, it should look something like this.
